5 Dong Ke – Tu Tinh Ca
5 Dong Ke, an eccentric name, signifies the individual characteristics from a group that made up of four (the fifth member, Giang Son, has moved on to be a solo songwriter) young and voluptuous ladies whose gorgeous voices blend together seamlessly to create breathtaking harmonies. What sets these girls (Bao Lan, Hong Ngoc, Thuy Linh and Lan Huong) apart from other bands is their willingness to explore new path. Their latest album, Tu Tinh Ca, which took two years to prepare, showcases their jaw-dropping a cappella techniques. And the most striking part about the band is the way these four talented musicians breathe together with a kind of connection that can only be accomplished through love, respect, practice and devotion.
Through Tu Tinh Ca, the girls transform familiar songs into their personal statements by daringly maneuvering around old song structures to create new sounds. With perfect intonations and rich melodic lines, they give Trinh Cong Son’s “Tien Thoai Luong Nan” a pure rejuvenation. Their a-cappella rendition, which filled with exquisite vocal harmonies, is one of the finest presentations on this particular composition. Their interpretation of “Ngau Nhien” is also an astonishing invigoration of Trinh’s work. The rhythm section is silky smooth; the tonal detail is exotic; and the snaring beatbox is off the hook. When the tempo doubles on the second half, the delivery is even more irresistible. The flow becomes instantaneous, and then the wordless vocals end the song with a stimulating novelty.
Besides Trinh’s music, 5 Dong Ke also recovers popular pieces of Nguyen Anh 9 and Tran Trinh. On the medley “Tu Tinh Ca”—which consisted of Nguyen Anh 9’s “Buon Oi Xin Chao Mi,” “Co Don,” “Loi Ve” and “Xin Nhu Lan May Trang”—the voices weave in and out of one another, complement each other’s thoughts, support each other’s lines, back up each other’s verses, share each other’s soul, and create a heart-to-heart musical conversation. Plus the changing in tempo, the whistling and the fingers snapping permeate tremendous energy and spontaneous vibes into the elivening performance. Even though their version of Tran Trinh’s timeless “Le Da” (lyrics by Ha Huyen Chi) is not the best I have heard, it is certainly a distinctive one.
With fruitful collaboration and tight integration between the members, the girls have created some of the most compelling and refreshing works in such a minimal style. Tu Tinh Ca is definitely impressive, but the length of the album is way too short (only four tracks, a medley and a bonus). An instant replay is almost required after the first spin. With a short list of tracks and without complicated orchestration, two years to complete the recordings seem like a long time, but the outcome is rewarding. It shows that the girls have invested a tremendous amount of time perfecting their vocal chords.
I haven’t had a chance to listen to their new CD Tu Tinh Ca yet, but I’m sure it will be good. I strongly recommend their 1st CD together (all 5 of them including Giang Son) titled EM. I discovered the CD when I went back to VN and loved it since. Most of the songs in the 1st CD are written by themselves.
I was wondering about their first album. Thanks for your recommendation.
donny, have you had a chance to listen to Quoc Trung’s new CD “Duong Xa Van Dam”. I heard this CD is very good, but I have not listen to it yet. If you do, please write a review. I am looking forward to it :)
No I have not, but I’ll write about it if I can get my hands on it.
oh, another thing. If you like acapella style, another band in VN who is also very good (in same class with 5 Dong Ke) is AC&M. All the members from this band have been graduated from School Of Music in Ha Noi. They have released 2 albums already too. I normally don’t like bands, but I like these two bands: 5 Dong Ke and AC&M. What set them apart from other bands in VN is their style of music and their vocal skills.
Yeah, I have heard of AC&M. They do alot of back-up vocals for other singers. 5 Dong Ke is the first band that I dig. Unlike AC&M, their a cappella style is fused with a bit of jazz, which I find interesting.
AC&M sings folk songs in a-capaella style. Ly Con Sao, Thang Bom, etc… Those kind of songs. 5 Dong Ke does more of contemporary songs, hence they’re a bit more popular.
I got this albums along with Le Minh Son’s Guitar Cho Ta, My Linh’s Chat Voi Mozart, and Kasim Hoang Vu’s Vi Dau. First impression was that, case designs were elegant and sort have like avant-garde style. Especially the disc label. Looking through the songs list, I almost thought this should be TCS’s CD. Three out of four regular songs are TCS. So, they could have easily replace Le Da with something else from TCS’s collection.
At any rate, I love this album. And I agreed with Donny that “Tien Thoai Luong Nan” was indeed fresh rejuvenation. I donot which of the four ladies leads the first solo vocal, but her Northern accent leaves such a deep impression. I couldn’t get enough of it that I repeats it couple of time before the next track. Ngau Nhien is another ear-catching track, it’s astonishing when they switch between high-lo, fast-slow to give a fine rendition of the old TCS songs.
The medley is very well-done eventhough I’m not a fan of medley. But they can sure melt the songs all together to make it sounds like one. Exceptionally well-done. I didn’t like the bonus track, just because it has music for a-capella group. It actually a weaken the album and I wish they’d have leave it off the album.
I need to order their debut album to see how well they’ve sounded.
The bonus track is for the group to taste the water with one of the member’s composition. I agree it is a weak one and falls out of place on the album, but at least they were smart enough to list it as a bonus track.
TTBlue, as for your point about making a Trinh’s CD. From the marketing standpoint, they were clever for not selling their product as a “Trinh’s album” or else they would have been hammered like Thanh Lam for riding off Trinh’s music. TL is taking a lot of beating from the press for her Trinh’s albums. These girls aren’t just talented, they are pretty smart too.
Yeah, if I have to pick one of them as my .. ahem .. gf/wife/partner, I think I’d have to close my eyes an just blindly pick one *GRIN*.
As for Thanh Lam on TCS’s music, I think people just too fogeyish. If TL’s rendition of TCS’s songs is not their can of worm, they could easily dish it and leave it alone. Instead, press & general public grill on the fact that her interpretation is (and I quote) “destruction to TCS.” I heard anything from “hie^’p da^m” TCS’s music to “murdering.” If they want good ol’ tradational TCS, stick with Khanh Ly.
I applaud Thanh Lam for being courageous and exploring her own identity in TCS’s work. It might not be the easiest thing on the ears, but the matter of fact is.. she’s establishing a very distintive ways of interpretation on the old songs.
Sometime, people just need to take a chill pills. TCS’s music is not a religion. :)
Yeah man, you just pick one and leave the rest to me :) JK
As for TL, I am 100% behind her too, but when Dam Vinh Hung says he’s going to make another Trinh’s album, that’s when I bring out my sledge hammer.
As I was scouring the web on my currently unsuccessful search for some song samples of their new album, I ran across some of their music videos in *.wmv format. [windows media plugin is required i believe] Loi Ru is one of their earlier works I believe since all 5 girls can be seen here. In Dem Thanh Vo Cung (Silent Night), I think we see current group with four members.
Thanks for sharing, Joseph.
Curiousity got the best of me… I needed to find a copy of 5DK new second album to see for myself. But as luck would have it, when I asked the local music shop about the album they kindly informed me that 5DK was making an appearance in Little Saigon for a charity concert. And what a night it was! I got my cd, a complimentary poster, and enjoyed amazing vocal performances from 5DK and Anh Tuyet along with virtuoso piano playing from the composer himself, Nguyen Anh 9. The way 5DK sings their acapella where each distinctive voice adds an element to the whole is like sampling a wine or a craft beer with all its subtleties. Live performances are always a treat; this was one to remember!
Joseph, you are one luck dude. They do look fine. Thanks for sharing.
all thou it is nice. i know that there are naked photos published on the internet, those belongs to a member of 5Dk it is a shame for them. And a member of theitr band is involving id prostitution.i can prove it
yes phuong I agree with you , this is a case done by just a one member of them.against a British Lawyer, but except her all the others seem to be good.this member of 5DK IS HAVING A VERY BAD RECORD EVEN IN VIETNAM.
her name is Nguyen Thuy Linh. it is a shame for us as Vietnamease. She is ofcourse a flurt who fucks around for money. And she destroy the name of 5DK.
desperate times calls for desparate measures, no?
Nguyen Anh 9’s “Buon Oi Xin Chao Mi,” “Co Don,” “Loi Ve” and “Xin Nhu Lan May Trang”…
If you really want to hear good music, the new Paris By Night has Nguyen Anh 9 as a guest and he plays the piano accompanying his favorite song, “Co Don”..
