Thuy Nga’s Target
According to the sitcom, “Con Duong Nghe Thuat Chong Gai,” in Paris By Night 81: Am Nhac Khong Bien Gioi 2, I am not qualified to criticize Thuy Nga’s product since I didn’t pay twenty five bucks for it, even though I get to watch the original DVD. I am not interested in writing another review since ninety-six percent of the video is garbage anyway. Yes, even Tuan Ngoc’s performance is awful. Mad kowtows, however, to his pops Lu Lien. Even with such an unaesthetic program, Thuy Nga still manage to sell their product, and I have to give their marketers the credits for that. They know their real consumers, and they know how to entertain them. Who are they targeting? The Vietnamese married men.
Unlike American married men who find their entertainment in strippers, Vietnamese married men are either too shy or too scared to step into strip spots, and Thuy Nga marketers see that. Somebody has to entertain the Vietnamese married men because their wives don’t. When was the last time a wife stripped her for man? She makes love to him, but she doesn’t tease him. Part of a wife’s responsibility is to make sure her man gets his mandicine. And when a woman works twelve hours a day (many Vietnamese women do), she just wants to get it done and over with. So she would give him a quick blowjob, just enough for him to be hard for five minutes. After that she could get a peaceful rest. She satisfies his needs, but won’t entertain him. So he has to find another way to entertain himself.
Why and how do Thuy Nga marketers target Vietnamese married man? Buying a Thuy Nga’s video is like killing birds with one stone. He could get his fantasy on while watching Paris By Night’s video with his wife and kids. Thuy Nga are so clever at incorporating PG-13 entertainment into their videos. Let’s take Minh Tuyet’s performance of “Da Khong Yeu Thi Thoi” for example. She is so good at stripping that she doesn’t even need a pole, and Thuy Nga wouldn’t want it to be so obvious either. To take the performance to the next level, they wanted to give a sense that she is floating in the air by grabbing on to the red curtain. To pull this off, they have four strong hands behind the curtain supporting her ghetto booty (Damn! I want that job). She works like a professional stripper while the camera focuses on her slightly sagged breasts. She even pulls off some of her garments. If her presentation is not a strip tease, I don’t know what is. Minh Tuyet is not alone, the usual suspects includes Nhu Loan, Bao Han, Loan Chau, Ho Le Thu, Thuy Tien, and Luu Bich.
To show how much a Vietnamese married man loves his wife, he would run out and buy Thuy Nga’s DVDs whenever they release regardless if they are good or bad as long as the whole family can enjoy. He could sleep through other performances as well as Nguyen Ngoc Ngan’s and Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen’s yakidiyak, just make sure to wake him up when the girls come on stage.
Donny, I have to say I am impressed with your insight on this one ! I often wonder why alot of my husbands’friends who are aproaching 40′s range love Thuy Nga ‘s products. Once we were at a friend’s house and they put a video on, my husband went to another room
and took a nap. I ask him why he doesn’t want to watch it , he said it’s a stupid waste of time. Could it be that he is well-entertained at home already? :) Great job Donny and great observation and I think you hit it right on the nose again dear brother!
How’s the Korean singers? Just wonder, donny.
Phuongtim
Well thank-you for insulting my grandmothers, my mother, my aunts, my sister and my girlfriend all at the same time.
ROTF laughing… This post is ridiculously funny yet quite clever. It is so donny. Stefan, take a chill pill dude!
Hey my clever Donny, I read your posting to my better half last night and he was laughing so so hard !!! He said it’s a good thing he never watch any of it otherwise he would be in trouble with me !! :0)
Yes this posting is one of the funniest one ever Donny, I just love it !!!
Yes, and one more thing, my Ha Tran in Thuy Nga sings crap songs only. Miss her so much.
hihi, but your posting made me rush to buy this DVD. I enjoy Ho Le Thu’s beauty (hope someone in Thuy Nga read this and double the paycheck for her next time).
IMO, if Thuy Nga wants to focus on sex, that’s its business. At least it entertains Vietnamese families, let them listen to Vietnamese for a short time. This is the time for people of a family gather and share their life (I support stefan’s comment).
But does the lack of seriously made, aesthetic programs reflect the true holes in Vietnamese culture oversea? If noone buys these products, nobody makes them.
Long time ago Quoc Bao wrote an article criticizing Vietnamese oversea music. Although he was so harsh. But I think most part of talk is correct.
http://vnexpress.net/Vietnam/Van-hoa/2004/05/3B9D2E24/
Anyway, keep posting Donny. Wake us up for anything valuable. We can take care our basic instinct ourselves. haha.
You’re right, Donny, of course: Thuy Nga videos are a very clever mixture of sexual titillation for male viewers and makeup and fachion show for the female clientele, although I suspect the Vietnamese men already have their own porn collection on their computer hard disk (hee hee, I said «hard»). I myself find these videos a bit boring and interchangeable: same singers, same jiggling T&A, same Hollywood settings, same dances that have no connection to the song lyrics, etc..
Donny,
Now you make me curious. I want to see how bad Tuan Ngoc peformance is, especially this is a duet with Khanh Ha. It is not because they are singing in french, is it? :)
hehehehehehe… so true. Donny, this posting is my favourite.
I don’t agreed with your views on PBN 81. I think you are over analyzing things. I think all if not most of your reviews on PBN products are unfair but again, you are entitle to your own opinion. Even though I don’t like PBN 81 as much as PBN 79, I have to admit that they were very creative in their show. I think next time, you just need to enjoy the performance and just don’t think too much.
Like I said, 96% of the video is garbage, so this post is not a review. But since htc wants to know about Tuan Ngoc’s performance, I’ll say something. I was refering to his rendition of the “God Father” theme. His English singing didn’t convinced me. He’s my man, but gotta tell it like it is. As far as his duet with Khanh Ha, no comment since I don’t know French.
Wow! Hoa Nguyen, I thought Thuy Nga’s marketing strategy only works on married men, but you just proved that it also works on girls. Damn! They are good. Yeah, go get the DVD, you’ll love it, especially the way Ho Le Thu works them boobs. They are mighty firm. Hope she’ll get triple payment (1 for her, 2 for her boobs) next time because she’s getting paid quite low for her work.
Stefan, not sure how I insulted your family, but it is not my intention.
Mini, I do enjoy the performances, especially Minh Tuyet, Ho Le Thu, Bao Han (bony legs), and Luu Bich, even though I don’t consider them as artistic. Actually I am ready to be whipped by Luu Bich. Bring me some of that “Hot Stuff” baby!
I agree with Donny. Tuan Ngoc should stick with singring in Vietnamese only. Since I studied French for several years I also think that
Khanh Ha too, should also stick with singing Viet also. Her French singing is just OK, not great.
my 2 cents
Wait the minute, from my experience, married Vietnamese men don’t buy Thuy Nga’s video. The wives are the ones who buy these videos.
I think most guys just get online porn if they want to see some skin. It’s cheaper than buying Thuy Nga’s videos.
Tuan Ngoc singing “God Father” theme must be part of the Liên Khúc “Âm Nhạc Không Biên Giới”. Sorry, I’m only guessing here since I don’t have the DVD. I only heard him singing My Way in English. It was not bad. However, I have to agree that he should stay with Vietnamese songs.
Donny, you can criticize ThuyNga’s products to your heart’s content but to associate their marketing strategy and Vietnamese men, their sex life, their wifes and how they please or not please their men is very stereotypical. You have, in the past, been neutrally critical with many art projects. I’m afraid your disgust for ThuyNga’s products may have made you irrationally bias.
Donny, I’m really hoping that you’ll write a review for Asia 50.
Man, you are such a fag.
I think PBN videos do not only target the Vietnamese married men but the single men too, and the young people who don’t understand the meaning of the songs or the lyrics but only care about the easy listening rythms and fancy dances. They are still making money since they are one of the few big Vietnamese entertainment productions oversea so people doesn’t have much choice.
As I love performing infront of live audience, it is hard for me to watch people lip sing and do silly dancing with making silly faces!
I guess some people have to
make a living. I am not stuck up or anything but if I ever get famous in my old age LOL ! (Donny, don’t laugh) I will refuse to lip sing and those silly facial and gestures expressions. Music should touch the heart and real. How can it be good if everything is SO FAKE?
Lip synching was more or less the rule of the day in the old days (by that i mean the 80′s and maybe early 90′s) because artists were not happy with the kind of sound those studios were able to produce, and they wanted to be remembered as perfectly sounding. Now there should be less need for such shenanigans. Everyone should be able to earn their keeps by doing it live.
“I am not qualified to criticize Thuy Nga’s product”.
I have to agree.
Hi Hoa Nguyen, Please don’t even mention whoever that guy named Quoc Bao. I read that article and think he’s ignorant and musically a complete idiot.
To Donny, chill out man!! I support both Asia & ThuyNga. They’re the only ones to upkeep our Viet culture oversea whether you like it or not.
Love you all who cares about arts or original music.
Peace !
I don’t even who Quoc Bao was, and when i read that article, i too, thought that he didn’t know what he was talking about. I check out his works and most of them are just like ‘instant noodles’.
http://ngoisao.net/News/Dien-dan/2004/11/77359B54/
Why do you still attempt to write music reviews?
to the above poster, why do continue to read them?
Interesting to read the article that was written by Quoc Bao. It was an old article so I don’t bother to comment since a lot of people from ngoisao.net already spoke up for me. He is really like :”ech^’ ngo^`i d+a’y gie^’ng”. I wonder what he would say about Vietnamese music now, mixing French, English, Vietnamese and Chinese words and melodies, even rap in Vietnamese.
you’ve got to be kidding me. and vietnamese men are no different from any other men, wtf?
if you can get off to the pg 13 crap they put on PBN then you’re pretty sad. that stuff is so tame, it’s like PBS barney or sesame street as compared to what you’d get by just turning on the damn tv and watching american programs. so really…just yet another attempt at sounding clever through being “scathing” or “hardcore”.
I read two reviews from you, Asia 50 and PBN 81. and I think you are full of $#&$ man. particularly the way you criticize PBN 81, not the video contents because I don’t really care about it. Your immature, idiotic, unprofessional comments about vietnamese men. I think Thuy Nga must have pissed you on the head, or your vietnamese brothers, fathers, mothers, wife, and sisters or if you’re old enough your daughters must have treated you badly.
And if you’re really one to be a public critic you will have to learn how to be fair and square.
BTW pirating PBN 81 for review is against the F^%King law too. I am saying this because I didn’t believe you bought one.
Donny has interesting observation and wrote a fun article. Some are correct and some are not. I guess many buy Thuy Nga or Asia just because they show support to the Vnese arts/culture and feel they are rich or comfortable to associate with those pretty singers and with those rich or money to spend audience.
About Quoc Bao’s writing he blowing things up and try to accuse whatever tiny mistakes/difficiencies in our life here. Of course, Marxism, Leninism, and Stalinism are not foreign and absurd to those Vnese papers.
Glad to hear someone could take a joke. :)
I think, Ho Le Thu’s performance was the only worth watching of this dvd. They’re getting worst and worst and are running out of things to put on stage i think. Anybody a fan of Tuan Ngoc? hehehhe they’ve been having him singning french musics make me wonders hehehhe. Wonder why Thai Oanh Oanh is not singing this time :( ,she ‘s cute
dude peace
have you just recently jumped onto the visualgui bandwagon? i have no comment on donny’s comment but before you go off on someone about their position on something like pbn reviews, go back a couple years of reviews and understand his ‘frustration’ not that it deters me from buying the videos. gotta support my girl nhu loan…keke
peace out ~couldn’t help it
u nasty ass perv need to shut your fuckin stinky ass trap hole before i shut it 4 u. Your opinions r shity ass dumbass shit of opinions. Stupid ass hole. Gay fag.
Go home and fuck your ass bitch.
fuck ass bitch
thuy nga rocks u suck

PBN doesnt suck
n u needa get a fucken damn life!!
ur jus jealous thuy nga make more money than you, and if thuy nga sux so bad then why did u even bother watching it??
u fucken ass perv!!!
i agreed with lianna!!
fuck u!!
n thuy nga rox!!! think wut u think bcuz it’s jus ur opinion!!
man if i find out who u are imma hunt you down!!!
and SHUT THE FUCK UP!!
Can not believe “liana and donny hater” are such low class, il-educated, gang like ignorants. Donny if either be wrong or right in his view is still so much higher than these two filthy Vnese red necks. I do agree that most of Thuy Nga are junks and I never buy them. I think the best product they ever produced is Pham Duy series, eventhough in the interview Pham Duy was so clumsy.
I feel embarassed with Thuy Nga, and when my children’s white friends come I feel embarassed and nothing to show off about Thuy Nga’s arts.
T in Delaware, yes… thank you. Thuy Nga’s old products were fantastic like Pham Duy, Ngo Thuy Mien, and even Lam Phuong series. They were about music, but now… I absolutely understand what you mean about being embarrassed by showing Thy Nga’s video to American. Nguyen Tan Hoang showed clips of TN’s clips in his experimental videos to Vassar’s audience to show Vietnamese pop culture and I almost wanted to leave the room because of the silly giggles and laughsters from the Americans.
Quoc Bao is one midget buckteeth vc punk; he has stolen others’ music and made it like his own writing.
What a dumbass vc!
Seems like the only good shows Thuy Nga ever does anymore are the “3 Nhac Si” shows they produce every year… :(
I agree with you Nguyen. I wonder how many times they’ve used that technique, but they’ve worn it down pretty badly.
Nice entry btw Donny, tops.
i like their 3 composer videos, at least you know the song choices will be good. this one is even worse then their usual.
I liked the PBN 74 “3 Composers” edition. Song Ngoc is a good writer! Havn’t seen PBN 81 yet, but plan to buy it soon.
Ridiculous. Way to not only objectify Vietnamese women but belittle Vietnamese men. Everything you posted was a massive generalization. If you don’t like it so much, maybe you should, gee I dunno, stop watching it?
But I guess to be fair, you are entitled to your opinion.
yup, song ngoc is a very good song writer, he has a sense of humor too. that was the last PBN that i liked because the songs were impeccable. most of the performances were hit or miss, but at least there was good music somewhere underneath all that fluff.
agree with you there, Tannie. just saw the PBN 81 – the songs were pretty good. Minh Tuyet’s song sounded nice too. duno what the purpose of Nhu Loan getting wet was, but it was a good performance.
oh i was referring to “hoa buom ngay xua”. PBN81 is another story and judging by the concensus, a real failure. 3 Korean Performances in a row is a bit much, and the sad part was that the Korean performances over shadowed most of the show. Just because Korean drama’s are popular doesn’t mean i necesarrily want to listen to their music. I think one performance would have been more suitable. The MC’s are pretty stale this time around and they kinda just say something to the effect of “this is the next song from _____”. Don’t get me wrong, NNN is a smart guy, but his knowledge in music cannot be compared to Viet Dzung or Nam Loc who are composers. What really stinks about the latest PBN are that most of the performances are contrived and the arrangements are horrible. “My Way” was uncomfortable to watch and the updated but downgraded arrangement sounded horrible. Sounds like beep beep bloop bloop and a simple loop from a Casio keyboard.
I don’t agree with Donny’s accessment that the target market is married vietnamese men, but this PBN isn’t very good at all.
oh, and i should have usex spell check= accessment = assessment =)
u know what T guy or girl u need to shut the f-up because i’am not noe low class like u u don’t even f-ing noe me b**** i’m f-ing richer than u b****. So shut the f up because u r jealous of thuy nga thuy nga super rocks n u super sucks don’t call me noe f-in redneck b****. N visual gui has some f_ing major problems. Visual gui your reviews r so fin preverted so shut the f up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Donny hater rocks!!!!!
Visual Gui sucks ma Chucks!!!!!!!!!
u noe what visual gui i don’t know what the f is worng with u, but u really suck. u have no right to critize thuy nga like that because u r not professional in your work u sound so preverted n nasty what kind of person r u. Do u noe how hard people work in Thuy Nga. u jackass! Don’t be hating on PBN because PBN rocks ma socks.
Damn, cool down lady. Let’s make baby, not war. :)
Are you sure donny?
If Lianna was Yoko would you dare to play Lennon? ;)
She is my Yoko, because I think she is speaking Japanese to me. What the heck is “sucks ma Chucks?” :)
So then johnny, watch out for your obsessive fan donny-hater! And don’t live too close to Central Park! :)
Good observation, Donny! Hahhah, that is why I would prefer Asia’s over PBN. I do not want to be rude….but nuff said.
i like your style ,man…but becareful if u dont want to pay child support for ‘yoko ‘children ..hahaha
ur hatred towards Thuy Nga is so wrong. Get a life.
dude, you are harsh on this production. You are one of those vietnamese people who criticize their own people and never support the ‘viet pride’, no one vietnamese people are getting nowhere in this world. damn, reminds me of soccer.
If it seems like I am assuming, well, you did the same thing with the strip tease. I bet you’re not a dancer or have never taken a dance class before.
who r u donny hater?
Whoa there’s people talkingg about my sister (Ho Le Thu’s) boobs. scary and disturbing for me. well thanks for the comments I’ll make sure chi Thu reads them. =] Have a nice day
Donny,
Ignore those low-class V rednecks, and yes you are redneck and need to broaden your vocabulary. You can indeed express yourself without using those odious f this f that. Donny has his opinion, if you don’t agree that’s fine, no need to be so low-class and vulgar. Anyway, I digress a little, I meant to say I do agree with you, Thuy Nga uses a lot of sexuality to sell her tapes. For instance, if Nhu Loan didn’t look like the way she looks, she wouldn’t never make it on the stage because her voice is aweful. I think she should have stuck to modeling for them instead of singing. Much regard.
Comment#35…why don’t you shut the fuck up because you got no fuckin’ life either for coming in here reading and posting your shit!
i think you’re an idiot.
Man i was looking for lyric for Nhu Loan song in PBN 81 and came acrossed this hilarious and damn harsh post. Donny, I dont know what you have against Thuy Nga production and the crews is mate but you sure came up with some bias stuffs.
I think you are being prejudice and unfair with Thuy Nga and some of the singers you mentioned. Firstly Thuy Nga is not just targeting married man, they are targeting everyone who enjoy vietnamese music/performance. As you all record that Thuy Nga has been around for a long time now, and is watch by Vietnamese worldwide (include yourself Donny). Some people view PBN merely to relax and to be entertain. Others see it to learn more about our culture (non-vietnamese viewers, little kids who live abroad). Some people buy PBN for the “Hai Ky” and to see their favourite singers. And some people like yourself Donna watch PBN to criticise. Different people have different perception, hence they will have different motives. Not all Vietnamese men are shy and not all married men view PBN for the purpose that you “suggested”. If Thuy Nga was to just targeted Married Vietnamese MEn, i think they would have gone out of business a long time ago. Your post completely lost its credibility the moment you suggested that Thuy Nga’s marketing team is targeting Vietnamese Married Men.
Let me ask you a question, how many of those songs, the songs that suggested PBN used as a marketing tool to lure married men to watch PBN 81 was in the whole show? About 5 songs? thats like 20 mins of the whole 2 hours + show. Thats a tiny proportion and you here accused Thuy Nga of devoted their whole show to just “Married Viet Men”, isnt that abit unreasonable? Also the songs that sing by the singers you blacklisted are actually targeting younger viewers and the way they dress/performance are no way near inappropriate. Wake up and look outside the conservative box you are in. This is PBN 81 and this is 2006. There is nothing wrong with the performance or the way they (singers you blacklisted) dressed. The only thing you can blame them for is for having a good fashion sense. Also if the “unsatisfied married viet men” want to see pretty women naked, i doubt they would ran to a video shop and purchase PBN. There are heaps of options out there like the internet, porn videos. Come on Donny give us Viet men some credit here hahah.
Entertainment industry is a dynamic business world, and Thuy Nga production are well aware of this. Thats why they are slowly changing their style to attract and encourage younger generation. We all do respect, but older viewers (like our grandparents generation) are no longer a big/main market target for Thuy Nga production like they used to be. Sorry but this is the fact.
Well anywayz, next time please make a more credible post mate.
ps. Does anyone know where i can find the lyric for Nhu Loan song in PBN 81 ? hehehe
I also came by these funny comments on your post donny when I was looking for Minh Tuyet’s lyrics in PBN 81. I totally agree with Ryukensoyki. Your statement is too general and you make quite a few unfair presumptions on Thuy Nga’s target audiences. If you had actually bought one then you would have an idea of “real consumers” who are buying PBN videos, or dvds.
Anyways, I’d pick PBN over AISA anyday.
