Ha Tran – Doi Thoai 06 (Communication 06)

Ha Tran must have been on Ecstasy when she made Doi Thoai 06 (Communication 06), a way-too-over-hyped album in which she sounds mad high over the zoned-out, overdosed beats. By drowning her vocal lines into the space-trance arrangements, electric Ha boasts it up to be her most groundbreaking work up to date. Save me the chuckles, girl. The musical production is nothing more than the softcore, wimped-out, and girlish ripped off from The Crystal Method, The Chemical Brothers, and Prodigy who set the underground breakbeat and bigbeat trend a decade ago. So where does the innovation play in Doi Thoai 06? Weaving Vietnamese aesthetics into acoustic sound? We have fused jazz, blues, world music, r & b, and hip-hop into Vietnamese repertoires, and now Ha Tran takes a step further with the concoction of E-gorging style. Revelation.

The album kicks off Nguyen Xinh Xo’s “Giac Mo La” (Delusive Dream) with speaker-traveling effects, pseudo-organic sounding that works against her voice instead of enhancing it. Then Tran Tien’s “Ra Ngo Ma Yeu” (Leaving The Alley) begins with children singing over soft but big beat, which also ended up overpowering her small voice. The instrumental “Tieng Goi” (The Calling), written by her and her man, is like playing with high-tech effects made possible by GarageBand. The remake of “Mua Bay Thap Co” (Mist Over The Ancient Tower) is a damned sacrilegious rendition. While the beat suggests Gothicism, she sings about Buddhism. She really needs to get off that coke. As for “Deep Water,” she sings, “wet me up” instead of “wake me up” and “unbreakaball” instead of “unbreakable?” The mispronunciations show that if the song was about “Deep Throat,” she could have pulled it off with her technical skills. Breathe in, breathe out, and take it all the way down. (I need to get off the coke myself.)

Doi Thoai 06 has demonstrates, once again, Ha Tran has desperately tried to reinvent herself. I support artist who constantly pushes her work to the next level, but she needs to stay focus on mastering one style before moving on to the next. And the more she attempts to progress beyond Nhat Thuc (Solar Eclipse), the more regress she gets.

  4. Donny: Miyo is right, why are you so vulgar? Is it necessary? Many people look up to you to review Vietnamese music, is it the professional way to do it? Your tone and your words toward Ha Tran totally disgust me. It’s so disrespectful of you to compare her songs to Deep Throat, a porno movie. Even if you find her album not pleasing, you should not comment like that to someone’s work. I hope this has nothing to do with the incident you had with Ha Tran and Phong (the guy who claims to be her website master) a couple months ago.

You can say that I like Ha Tran, just as much as you like Ngoc Lan. However, I am not raising my voice because of the fact that you don’t like her album, it’s your unprofessional, disrespect reaction/review to her album that bugs me.

Man, I had great respect for you before, maybe it’s time for me that change that.

  9. Luat, the real truth is: I write my comments without even reading Donny’s sometimes. Believe it or not, I didn’t even read Donny’s on Ha Tran’s Doi Thoai 06 this time since it’s a little long. (Now, after reading your comments, I go back and read it). However, I find Donny as a young (younger than I am) man who has the same views with me in many things. I’ve told him by personal emails and even in my comments that I admire Donny.

However, you didn’t read my comments carefully! I did “disagree” with Donny about Don Ho! I think his “Vi Do La Em” is below average 3/10! I even brought up the CD Cover’s thing that isn’t as simple as what Donny really is into. (Simplicity is the word that I like about Donny’s work.)

Luat, you like Tran Thu Ha, huh? I do, too. But not Doi Thoai 06 nor the Ha Tran something that she had Thuy Nga prepresented to produce for her. I only like Ha Tran with Nhat Thuc & some of Quoc Bao’s and Tran Tien’s. Just some!

This is Donny’s blog! And the “comments” section is for our “blogs”. Agreeing or disagreeing la chuyen thuong tinh trong cuoc song, Luat oi!

  10. LuatDanh!

    This what Donny said:
“Despite the minor misses, Vi Do La Em marks one of Don Ho’s finest works up to date. Although his dark, slightly gruff voice is captivating, what heighten his flow and delivery are the soulful, lustful musical productions. With both vocal artistry and musical wizardry weaving into one, Dieu Huong’s compositions have been given a fresh and sensuous vibe.”

And this is what I said:

“HanLy, I think anybody can! Anybody that was, is, or will be in love! Tai sao lai tuyen bo 1 cau xanh ro*`n vay HanLy? Am nhac khong nen so sanh hoac cho nguoi nay, nguoi no la #1! Again, I think Don Ho is a good artist! But album “Vi Do La Em” qua’ te^.!”

  13. Miyo and Luat are equally important, can’t say “someone who is” here, say “some people who are important…”, donny.

Just ordered album from Kim Loi, have to wait to see if your critique is justified. Actually you can say anything you want about an artist or his/her work as long as it’s not a personal attack (we know you’re against it), but you did step over the line in the last “original” paragraph when you used the “Deep Throat” reference on Ha Tran’s English enunciation and technique. Of all the people that I know, TThH is the quintessential Vietnamese woman who has manners and poise so you should spare her the pornographic comparison. She is also very talented, we should give her room to explore new forms of expression and “allow” her to sing in “other” languages. If you will allow me, I’m attaching here part of a “review” that I wrote about Ha Tran, on Thuy Nga Forum 5/11/2005, upon her “Sac Mau Tinh Ca” album release:

“…Tran Thu Ha’s voice is a rare kind. She’s endowed with the best kind of voice (complete range, healthy and powerful), she was trained at the National Conservatory of Music, and she has the soul of an artist. TTH can go high or low without straining herself. In a gusty wind she simply spreads her wings and soars higher while a lesser voice would surely meet with turbulence. Difficult passages? She flies through like a maglev train, with the greatest of ease. TTH is from the North, so a northern accent (a prerequisite for a singer) is a natural. However, one does not hear the acute regional quality that often distinguishes one singer from another (Khanh Ly is so northern, so was Thai Thanh of old). Instead, Tran Thu Ha’s tonal enunciation is tempered, well tuned and modulated, somewhat neutral, making her delivery adaptable to the stories of many more songs, therefore appealing to a wider audience (no doubt she has the ability to do regional or topical intonation as well). And she has expression to go with the materials. Listening to her new album Sac Mau Tinh Ca, I feel as if she knows intimately the feelings of the voices of the songs. (I find the wailing electronic accompaniment in Pho Ngheo a bit jarring). I agree with Country Road’s comments about the album, particularly about TTH’s rendition of the quite challenging Tien Thoai Luong Nan. To me it seems like TTH had meditated and successfully divined TCS before recording the song, and with it she reached maturity (a mark of maturity for all ca sy nhac Trinh?). This is not a song of popular acceptance, but an important one in Trinh Cong Son’s legacy. I agree with Country Road on most of his comments. He sat down and wrote the review after the third listen, but I feel one can replay this album over and over again and still find something new about the songs, about the recording, and most of all about Tran Thu Ha, and understand why she is an important Vietnamese artist. I feel TTH will give us more and more, she has the equipment, the talent, the education, and a hunger for the new. If she knows how to pace herself, she will be very long lasting on the music scene. I heard she is going to record again “Vet Lan Tram,” one of my favorites. And talking about the Thu Phuong’s monologue that made Country Road suddenly cynical, did you hear Huong Duong’s reading of Trinh Cong Son’s letter? It’s worth a review for CR. TTH’s rendition of Mua Hong is in the same album.”

Thank you, I’m her fan, unapologetically. Let people read this, and I’ll forgive you, my friend

  22. i’m overall very pleased with the HT’s this new cd. I’m sure her creativity will be muchly appreciated.

I like all the songs, but i’d have to go with “Deep Water” if pressed. Even though the English pronounciation is not perfect, it’s her madness in the singing that creates a very creepy, atmospheric, and haunting effect to me.

“Mua bay thap co” is another nice try. I’ve never heard HT’s voice that crystally clear, flexible, and desciptive. It feels as if she was trying to paint the song with her voice.

I’ve been watching her career especially since “Nhat Thuc.” No matter what she does in music, I respect the fact that she’s constantly pushing the envelop and refusing to compromise the mainstream music. To me, that’s innovative enough even though the music arrangment in the CD has already been introduced to the listeners. I’m very much looking forward to seeing HT singing these songs live and her future projects.

  26. I put back my original comment on “Deep Water,” with the omission of “Fuck me daddy,” in which I feel I have stepped out of line into her personal life. However, why should I back out for her when I already made tastless comments before on Mai Le Huyen, Cardin, Minh Tuyet, Nhu Loan, Tran Thai Hoa, Bang Kieu, and a whole bunch of others? By taking out what I write, I am being unfair to myself. And if I can’t speak out my mind like I always have, which is the purpose for this site, I might as well shut it down. 29. It is unfair to disgrace TTH in your post like you did. It’s perfectly ok if you openly express that you dislike/hate her or her music; but intentionally trash her like that, it’s so low. It’s not saying what you think anymore, but a personal attack. It makes sense that you’re so ‘brave’ not to give a shit about what others think, because after all, you’re a faceless man, not a public figure like TTH. No one can judge you, because you’re just an invisible ‘donny’ from visualgui, but you know damn too well that you can talk shit about singers and other well known people as much as you want. You can compare TTH’s singing w/ Deepthroat, and everybody knows exactly who you’re talking about. However, TTH, or anyone else, cannot say that perhaps your clitoris is located inside your dirty mouth, that’s why you need to trash people to satisfy yourself; simply because not a lot of people know who Donny is. It doesn’t matter if you don’t respect others, or others don’t respect you, but at least respect yourself man.

  30. You can say that my clitoris is located inside my dirty mouth. It’s all good. And you damn right, nobody knows who’s Donny is, just the Visual guy with a corrupted mind or whoever his words portrait him. So get your face out of TTH’s puss, man.

  32. Hi there, you don’t see innovation in Doi Thoai 06 because you’re luckily living in an advantaged world. You have uncountable choices of music tastes. You’re ahead of them. Even Ha Tran, she’s just been to the US for a couple of years, and this is a new style (new to her), and espectially to young people in VN. I wish you could understand how youngsters overthere, still considered a third world country, eager for high-tech products. To me, she’s just done a great job. However, I agree that overwhelming with advertisement for the socalled com 06 is not a good idea.

  39. Bravo Donny, I may not like all your comments but there is no reason to change your comments to please people.

I agree with mimi too. Most VN singers are from so-called famous schools and have good voice but they are not special at all. To me, they sound the same, probably because they got similar trainings. I wonder why Vietnamese singers keep singing the old songs with new mix, it is really annoyed sometimes. Hope they won’t turn TCS music into hip hop or Lam Phuong pre 75 music into heavy metal…

    Comment by DTDT — 21 September 2006 @ 2:08 am
  40. I used to like HT even though vocally she is not dynamic and soulful like TL, or has a naturally beautiful voice like ML. Yet, DT06 is a total disappointment to me. If she tried to make a serious album, it’s not serious enough. If she tried to reinvent herself, she is going backward. I listened to the whole album, trying to give her some credits. The only credit she’d get is for trying, really hard. I managed to drag myself through the entire album. The music arrangement is heavily loaded with electronic effects while her choice of songs leans toward Asian pop/R&B. It is a weird combination, a bad taste of mix & match. This album is too mediocre for someone who had produced such a good album like “Nhat Thuc”. Maybe she just got lucky back then?

    Comment by donny — 21 September 2006 @ 3:52 pm
  42. Donny,

you have no idea what the hell you talking about. I will point out your arrogant mistakes

-Garageband was made by Mac to be user friendly and idiot proof. Anyone, including non musician, can use Garageband and make good music, Mac wants it that way and paid bank to create the software. A 2 yrs old can make good music with Garageband. Ha’s new cd was not made by Garageband. So stop talking low about Garageband, it is a good software

-you should stick to jazz critic when you said, “The musical production is nothing more than the softcore, wimped-out, and girlish ripped off from The Crystal Method, The Chemical Brothers, and Prodigy who set the underground breakbeat and bigbeat trend a decade ago”, how dare you compare Ha being the Chemical Brother or Prodigy rip off. She is no where close to a rip off artist in this new CD, no where near. You have to be somewhat close to consider it a rip off, this cd is no where near it.
-Donny is wrong again for calling her an artist, she is a singer, watta an idiot.
-how dare you suggest Ha being on coke, Donny, you disappoint me. Have you tried Coke? good music was made on Coke, she is definitely not on anything for this Cd.
-finally, this one really made me want to deck you. What is wrong with reinventing oneself? Have you listen to the new music and new artist in Vietnam these days? No way she is reinventing herself. I think I know Ha but reinventing? Vietnamese fused Electronic is old news way back. Donny you talking shit.
I said to you Donny, stick to the web design, graphic stuffs, and jazz. I don’t think you know anything about Ha’s music, no one really know and neither do I. I really hate your arrogant rant on Ha, what is your problem. It is a free country, she can overhype and make bad cd anytime she want. you go to hell Donny.

I will not make a comment on Tran Thu Ha music because I have not make a copy of the cd yet. It is hard to find anyone who own one, seriously, I am not being funny here.

Here a simple solution to this debate. Do the music and let it does the talking. Ha does not even have to do anything else. Just let the music does the talking.

one last question, I check Ha’s website, WHY ARE YOU TALKING SO MUCH HA?

  48. Donny, you’re are right. The CD is aweful, and you’re the only one that point it out. Every article in Vietnam just all over her.

Hô hô, không thể nói chuyện văn hoá với kẻ vô văn hoá được. Trốn này bốc mùi quá nặng rồi.

  56. Don’t take it so serious, guys.
Com 06 is just an effect caused by Ha Tran’s ego. She can say that she did it for audience. We take it to make judgment on and discuss about; this way, we express our own ego, our own self, as well. We are not gonna be here, on the earth, forever; comming by to play human game then we will have gone. We are tricking ourselves, guys.

  57. Even if each of us could live 100 years, this length of time is not that long as majority of us thinks. So, we watch out our behavior to each other. Arguing about Com06 and TTH is just for fun for a while then the remains are feelings of respect. There’s nothing important to be so serious about cauz’ everything is gonna be left behind soon.
