Cardin – Va Hom Nay… Now I Know

Cardin Nguyen is one hardworking kid in showbiz. He writes his own lyrics, produces his own tracks and sings his own tunes, but he can’t obscure the fact that he doesn’t have what it takes to make even just a passable record. Va Hom Nay… Now I Know, his new release, is a proof. His rhymes are elementary; his beats come straight out of the club factory; and his singing is still mediocre. Even Auto-Tune couldn’t help correct his wimpy pitch.

On “Sell Out,” a sacrilege sample of Cheryl Lynn’s “Got To Be Real,” Cardin addresses those who talk behind his back. He mumbles some shit about daring someone to write a song and throw it back at him. He also accuses somebody of a copycat who can’t even translate some lyrics. He tries to talk in a tough voice, but you can tell, dude can’t even break grapes in a food fight.

His soft side comes out on Truc Ho’s “Va Hom Nay” and the Chinese-inflected “Mai Yeu Nguoi Thoi” with Chosen who drops some kindergarten rhymes about some chick who had done him wrong, even though he tatted her name on his arm. As if the slow version isn’t dull enough, he cuts another lounge session that is perfect for, well, lounging. And if you isn’t fallen asleep by then, the “Outro Lullaby,” which he sings for his child when it’s time to turn out the lights, will make sure you do.

To be fair, Cardin deserves the props for making his own music. Just give him about twenty more albums and he might get somewhere. We’ll see.

  1. Hmm, I have never seen you like Cardin on ur blog. My guess is u listen to him because ur Missus like him? As i don’t see how u’d listen to Cardin cd if u’ve never been a fan of his work and his voice b4. Why give him so many chances if u know that’s what Cardin likely will ever be? Or are u out of cds to listen to? He he

  3. She means your wife. Do you listen to Cardin because your wife listens to him?

Quite frankly, I agree with you. Hehe.

  4. I’ve never liked Cardin. He can’t sing! His voice is so weak even my brother ,who according to me cannot sing can out sing him. I mean I’m a girl and when I talk is louder than when Cardin tried to scream. Maybe I”m just a hater but I just dont’ understand why Asia still wants someone without any talents like him.

  6. Cardin to me is one of the most embarassing Viet “artists” out there. I know that sounds harsh and mean, I’m not trolling, just giving an honest opinion. I’m sure he works hard and it’s just my opinion.

At least Trish is cute..although equally as untalented as he is.

  7. hahah I agree with just my two cents. I saw Trish in a concert. When she was done singing, no one and I really mean no one clapped!

  8. Boosushi, wow, you made it to her concert. Mad props :)

  9. Hehe I went to a Trish concert before. Trish voice is way too soft to be singing live but she does have quite a fan base because of it :). Either Trish attitude was really bad or there must be something wrong with that crowd at Trish concert if no one clapped after she sang. I think if she is up there singing she deserve some encouragement… What happened to being nice.

  11. you guys are a so close minded. Embarassment? he’s our pride. Listen to his song in this album again, before you judge. If you can’t appreciate what he and lnt did in that session. then you have no right to even post a review, that’s a fact. And why does Asia have him around, because he’s the best at what he does. Look around. Sell out was for the people in the industry, for toward us fans, that’s seomthing we should appreciate, that he has the guts to speak for his belief. Well me one thing, name me another cd is better with facts to back it up, in terms for orginaility, even vocally. Adn ablel to arrangment his own music too. Because i would like to listen to anythign better than him. been looking

  12. another thing, listen to mai yeu nguoi with lam nhat tien…if u say he can’t sing…then obviously u don’t know what being a vocalist is all about about, before i read ur blog, i knew what u were goign to say alreayd too…taht sad for someone who like to write a review without being neutral.

  13. I’m really sad that this CD didn’t make you sleep..would had prevented you to show your ignorance to your readers…

the fact is that everything you said..is just insulting gifted people which talent is genuine.

firt paragraph you are insulting Truc Ho…coz if “His rhymes are elementary; his beats come straight out of the club factory; and his singing is still mediocre” then Truc HO should really have crap in his ears and eyes for not seing this

Sell out statement..well teh only thign Cardin is waiting for is that one of these singer that you don’t even dare to name (probably too ashamed to lsiten to them) to comu up and write a song back at him then there will be a real competition..even the level are not equal lol

And the loundge version of Mai Yeu Nguoi Thoi…You are insulting LNT and Truc Ho whose breath were taken away by this new version. but what do we know? You better know that song better than its own “writer and originator”

anyway I can only applause you for having the guts to make up so many craps without any strong back up…thanks for the good laugh =)

  15. the only times have listen to cardin are when i visit my parents on the weekends and they put on asia/paris (not even sure which one he’s in – that’s how much i’d care for him), and i’d accidentally hear him, and even then, i’d sprint for the remote control like usain bolt in the 100, and trying to find the “next” button like a diarrhoea person rushing to find the toilet

  16. hahah No didn’t go to Trish’s concert. I went to a summer concert with other artists, and she was among one of them. — I guess there are just some die hard fans out there that can’t accept the fact that their role models can’t sing.

    Comment by boosushi — 28 August 2008 @ 7:26 pm
  17. i think i can offer an partial statement here since i was one of those crazy Trish fans that went to where the old Asia store was to be the first in line to have my “I Dream of You” cd signed in person at the cost of being late for work… but in my defense, that was many moons ago.

The thing with pop music is its beats that carry the singer and not the other way around. For those who used like Trish or any pop-type music you can relate. The singers that you can listen to in acapella are the ones that tend to have more longevity. And usually it’s these people, once they can sync in harmony with the music that tend to cross the biases of favorites.

Donny’s a east cost hip hop/ tuan ngoc/ ngoc lan kind of guy. I can’t blame him for dishing on Cardin the way he does.

  18. Dudes, best to see singers live to judge them. These CDs are
just hard to say, digital enhanced.

with technology help. ALl you got to be is cute and can dance a little and willing to dress sleezy or gay then boom you can be a star LOL

  19. No disrespect to Truc Ho, but let’s keep it real. He’s also a businessman. If there’s a market for junk music, he doesn’t have a problem cashing in.

    Comment by donny — 28 August 2008 @ 11:00 pm
  20. Cardin is an embarassment to the vietnamese music industry, and so are all the vietnamese music productions. Since when does sex comes before music? All you see on stage nowaday are half naked singers, no body really minds that, except that they can’t really sing either. It’s better if they have the look and the voice, but these days, look comes before voice…that’s why it’s sad.

That’s partially because of the population choices, some of you out there apparently enjoy these kinds of junky music and there obviously a market out there for them…

The last Asia dvd was a shame to the face of humanity. Who the fuck would promote wars and shove the right wing attitude right into the viewers’ faces. Watching paris by night is like eating the cheesiest pizza out there, some cheeses are good though…heehhe

  21. whoa..it took you some time to come up with that one! I can smell smoke coming out from your ears lol..and it’s obvious that you don’t know him at all…business is out of his mind…and even more when it’s one of his songs.
OK I’m waiting for your next stupid statement, try to answer faster this time ;)

    Thanks

  24. toan do, let’s me name you three albums that knock Cardin’s out of the park.

Tinna Tinh’s Mu Tac. Oh yeah, her lyricism is way better too.
5 Dong Ke’s Canh Mat Troi.
Tung Duong’s Nhung O Mau Khoi Lap Phuong.

Listen to these albums and you’ll learn about creativity, originality and vocal ability.

  25. Goodluck Donny, I don’t think u can convert Toan do. Totally different taste…It’s like asking a person who like apples to substitute it with oranges..

    Comment by Lam Dien — 30 August 2008 @ 2:45 am
  26. I am not trying to convert anybody. I am just giving some examples of music that are more artistic than Cardin’s. It’s sad that the dude can’t find anything better than Cardin’s to listen too.

  27. Piece out everyone. There is no winner between Pho and Bu’n bo` so please do not waste time to argue here. Specifically, there is inconclusive and unhealthy debate here. Hate to see some one calls other “stupid.”
Donny, please just go back write whatever you want to. Hopefully, you can discover more singers out there so I can enjoy from it.
Check out this CD (Five For Fighting), track no. 4 (100 years), it’s a great song. Amazon has it for $9.97 per CD or download for $.99 a song.

  30. dude, seriously i was looking around for some honest opinion/review about the CD. But for someone to say

“the only times have listen to cardin are when i visit my parents on the weekends and they put on asia/paris (not even sure which one he’s in – that’s how much i’d care for him)……”

Due to fairness, you are wrong for even bother to write that much about something you don’t even know. In order to write a fair review, it has to be from a neutral point of view. It’s obvious you have something against Cardin. I guess i’ll go elsewhere for more fairness review. Just for this article you have lost creditabilities for all other sections you have ever spent time written. Think about that.
