Me and my folks ran into TG about 2-3 years back in front of Tu Quynh bookstore while he was checking on the sales of his just-published memoir. (He was in pretty dire shape financially then, and a publisher fronted him the printing cost). Bought a few copies for ourselves as a gesture and offered to help sell the books to family and friends. Turned out it was quite a treat as Mr. TG was a surprisingly gifted writer. There was nothing fancy or sophisticated about his writing, just the ability to keep the readers stuck to every page (lots of behind-the-scene details and of course dust). Through his ups and downs, one can really appreciate TG’s uncanny love for his craft and the resulting total disregard to his reality. I didn’t know the guy personally, but i imagine he would’ve made an awesome buddy.
Left behind are a poor widow and a young boy who need all the help they can get. You could chip in by picking up a copy at some Viet bookstore in SoCal (Don’t know if they’re still being sold though).
…I forgot the exact tittle though, but I’m sure the seller would know what it is.

What do you think about the book, A Nhien? I thought his story telling was very refreshing.
Dear TF: Mình luôn luôn hâm mộ lối viết hồi ký nói chung của mọi người dù là Phạm Duy, Tùng Giang hay Lê Vân (là những nhân vật viết hồi ký – chứ lẽ ra họ không nên đứng cạnh nhau).
Mình thích cuốn sách của Tùng Giang vì nhiều lẽ – lẽ lớn nhất là những suy nghĩ “xã hội” ngoài âm nhạc của Tùng Giang.
Ngoài kia, người ta vẫn có một suy luận cứng cáp rằng: Phải là người nổi tiếng mới viết hồi ký hoặc mới được quyền viết! Mình thì nghĩ ngược lại: ai cũng có thể viết hết! Mỗi đời người là một cuốn hồi ký đầy thú vị và bất ngời.
TF có nghĩ rằng cũng có thể có sự cộng tác viết của ai thêm không?

Nhưng một ý nhỏ (nhưng to): Tất cả các công việc liên quan đến media, nghệ thuật, văn hóa của cộng đồng nhỏ (i.e., Việt) trong một dòng chính (Mỹ) – đều chỉ là cố gắng và khắc khoải từ tâm của người làm việc và chỉ có bề nổi & bật (vì bản chất là làm việc với/cho/vì công chúng). Đa số là làm thêm công việc chuyên môn khác hoặc kinh doanh (dựa vào chút tên tuổi của mình) để mưu sinh! Và đó là tình hình chung, thế thôi, James ạ!

agreed with me 100%…just a memory between us.
