Hoa Mi – Mot Thoi Yeu Nhau

This debut release marks the emancipation of Hoa Mi after twenty years on hiatus. Through the test of time, the nightingale’s soprano shows no sign of deterioration. She still sounds sensational and sentimental on classic songs like Ngo Thuy Mien’s “Ban Tinh Cuoi,” Lam Phuong’s “Mot Minh” and Trinh Cong Son’s “Ru Ta Ngam Ngui.” Unfortunately, Bao Chan’s lackluster arrangements aren’t doing her ageless voice the service. Even on his own tune, “Ben Em La Bien Rong,” he brings nothing but a smooth, snoring flavor that is perfect for airplane restaurants.

  1. Very happy to know Hoa Mi is actively singing again. Can’t wait to get the CD. How can I buy the CD from USA?

  4. Yes, Hoa Mi & Thai Hien share some similarities, yet each has her individuality. I wish Hoa Mi has Duy Cuong backing her up!

  5. These are two exellent female vocalists… I have a lot cf respect for them. Thai Hien seems so sad all the time as if she has “tam su” I cann’t help but feel sad when I hear her or watch her sing.

  8. We think the same my friend.. I love that rendition of “Ru em tung ngon Xuan nong” by Thai Hien. Her voice was pure and simple and she captured the soul of the song well… of course her brother being one of the best musician did not hurt.

  9. I respect both of them, although I am not into them the way I used to . It’s not me that changed, it’s Thai Hien who has lost much of her strength in her voice and Hoa Mi who has become so softy. I love Thai Hien’s very first solo album in the US Hoa Thuong Nho Ai (all songs by Pham Duy) even though her voice was still very premature in the early 80s. And Hoa Mi, when will she stop being afrad of singing full-force with her thick classically trained voice?

Hey Thu Hoai, I am not crying any more (-:

  10. I love Hoa Mi and Thai Hien too..I agree with you all about grouping them together yet their voice still can easily be distinguised..Their voice is gentle and they sing at ease. My memory of Hoa Mi goes way back when she was in VN, prob 1983. Her wavy hair was a trend, many women including mum followed her style. Hoa Mi is a beautiful and smart looking lady. I remeber her and associated her singing style with Thai Thanh as their voice sound really high..Of course i was too young then to be able to distinguish the differences…I believe she was trained by Hoang Thi Tho may be early 1970′s and she was becoming more popular just before 1975. Just the other day when i listened to her singing Hon Vong Phu 2 i realised she made the song ( well covered by too many singers ) sound as good as the first time. A real well trained and intelligent singer. With Thai Hien i did enjoy her rendition of “Canh Hoa Trang” and is it called ” Phap Tha^n”
I also associated some similarities between Thai Hien and Ai Van, And sometimes Dalena, of course not the pronunciation but the voice..

  11. I like Hoa Mi singing Hon Vong Phu 2. The combination of her soprano voice and the content of the song successfully takes listeners back in time. She always looked sad when singing, her eyes misty to teary. I wonder if its genetics or deliberate. Looking forward to listening to her singing Ngo Thuy Mien songs. The best Ngo Thuy Mien collection I have listened to was made by Thuy Nga, Paris by Night 21. This still remains one of my favourite PBN of all time.

  12. Hoa Mi sing Cach Mang songs much better than love songs (please, don’t throw rocks at me,hehe). I loved her wavy hair in 1980 and before 1975 she had this natural long straight hair. I saw her coming home from school (Gia Long) all the time because I lived near her. I think her best song so far is Bong Cay Konia and Len Ngan, hehe. Sue me!

As for Thai Hien, she is so elegant and always looks like a doll, even now. Her voice was at top quality, of course only in my opinion, in the album called Thien Ca (Zen Songs) by Pham Duy.

I didn’t know that she sang the song Pha’p Tha^n !? Is this the one by Pham Duy based on a poem by Pham Thien Thu? I have it on CD by Thai Thanh (re-mastered from an old recording)?

  13. Ooh, speaking of Ai Van, I loove the song Nha Trang Mua Thu Lai Ve (of course, play it in Little Saigon and you’ll have your house burned, hehe)!

    Dalena? Hmm :P

  14. Yes Thai Hien sang “Phap than” in one of her cd of PD songs, the cd also has Canh Hoa Trang song.
As i said im totally anti communist, i do listen to some “Nhac Do” because it bring back childhood memories…like Bong cay Ko-nia ( i thought To Lan Phuong was the good singer of this song.. ), Mua Xuan ben cua so, 1 doi nguoi 1 rung cay, Hue Tinh yeu cua toi, Huong Tham….etc..
You saw Hoa Mi prior to 1975? Suave ..u showing ur age again…lol..just kidding..

  16. I never hid my age :P Yes, I saw her sing Nguoi Nu Tu Ve Sai Gon (it was beeeeautiful LOL) in a free outdoors concert. I also saw her sing Cuoc Doi Van Dep Sao in a theater on New Year’s Day 1976 :P

To Lan Phuong was great with Mua Xuan tren Ben Cang. However, I finally found a DVD of her old performances during one of my trips back and guess what, it didn’t feel the same! I didn’t find her as dynamic as I had felt before. Her technique wasn’t that good and she was so fat!

  18. It’s amazing how our taste in music change as time goes by.
One thing strange is my taste in female singers changed but
the male remains the same.. Tony Bennett, Tuan Ngoc, & Duc Huy.
Duc Huy will forever be my “nguoi tinh tram nam”. I love the man, the music and the voice.
